I like zombie movies. I haven't always been this way, but nowadays, I find them quite entertaining. But, much like the horror genre itself, there are good zombie films and there are utterly terrible zombie films. No middle ground. The Evil Dead trilogy = good zombie films. Romero's latest Land of the Dead = pretty darn awful. Zach Snyder's Dawn of the Dead remake = awesome. 28 Days Later = almost poetic in its greatness. I was excited when I heard there was going to be a 28 Days Later sequel, because the original was so good, that a second one would be good simply through inspiration. The first one was so good that after I first saw it, I touted it so much that I ended up seeing it 3 times in theaters with different friends. The sequel is good. I can proudly say that it did not let me down.

28 Weeks Later's story is superb and is supported by some amazing acting from the little boy all the way up. The shots of the dilapidated city and the American soldiers looking over it were also quite impressive. I've heard some reviewers say that the portrayal of the American military is pessimistic and shows them as mechanical drones. Well, if you were confronted with an outbreak of zombies who look like they can run 40mph, you would probably shoot and blow up everything you saw too. There is one major fault with this film which detracted from my enjoyment greatly and sort-of leaves me on the fence as to whether I recommend seeing it in theaters... the filming of zombie attacks was pretty damn hackneyed. Imagine the buildup and tension of a gaggle of pcp riddled zombies tearing through the walls of a house just to get a taste of delicious man-flesh. They make it in and just as you see the blood and pus riddled face of the first emerging undead come through the drywall...! Nothing. Not that they just stopped, but they may as well have. Every zombie attack looked like the director told the cameraman to shake the camera in front of a bloodied shoulder and then spin around real fast 5 times. Now, I know that filming action like that is difficult, but no, not so difficult that any creative mind should resort to cheapness like that.

I would say, if you are a horror or action film fan, or even a fan of well laid out dramatic tension, to rent this movie. If you're not any of those, you might want to rent it just for the sake of knowing that if there is a third one, (SPOILER) France may finally get their comeuppance.
