I went into The Hangover with huge expectations and was not let down. I'm a fan of Old School, Zach Galifianakis and drinking related humor and all of those elements came together here like a perfectly mixed cocktail. Because of this film, I am also now an active fan of Todd Phillips (director) and Bradley Cooper (who has starred in such films as The Midnight Meat Train, Kitchen Confidential, Failure to Launch, The comebacks, Touching Evil, I want to Marry Ryan Banks, Miss Match, The Last Cowboy, Stella Shorts, My little Eye, and Wet Hot American Summer). No, he is not a soft-porn actor, but he has the good looks for the part and he may be picking roles solely by how sexy the title is. Hell even Mike Tyson does a good job in this.
The writing in The Hangover is quick, witty and there are practically no throwaway gags... actually I can't remember one. Each joke is beneficial to the plot or character development and they come fast enough to make your sides hurt.
The only problem is the editing. Scenes transition pretty haphazardly and aren't timed well enough to give the acting its full effect. At times it feels like a comedian standing quietly and alone, center stage in full spotlight with a big smile on his lips hoping that the silent crowd got the joke and are waiting to laugh. But these feelings are never because jokes fail outright in this film, it's simply because of the editing. It's more apparent in the beginning than at the end, and still not nearly enough of a problem to fully detract my backing of this film.
